APERTURE & ESSENCE: SANTA FE 2026

Land of Enchantment Photo Wellness Retreat

With Matt Suess

Where Seeing Meets Being

The Call

You've been photographing for a while now - maybe years, maybe decades, maybe you just discovered your phone's camera as your creative voice.

You know the technical stuff. You've captured beautiful images.

But lately, something's shifting.

You find yourself pausing before you shoot. Breathing. Not just documenting - really seeing. Not just framing light, but feeling what it illuminates within you.

You're asking different questions:

What do I want my photography to mean?
How do I create images that reflect who I'm becoming?
What happens when I slow down enough to truly see?

If this resonates, you're ready for something more.

Not another workshop where you exhaust yourself chasing shots.

Not another checklist of locations.

Not gear obsession or pixel-peeping.

You're ready for integration - where your creative practice meets your inner journey.

That's what we're creating together in Santa Fe.

The Experience

Seven days. Six nights. Six photographers.

Healing waters. Ancient light. Deep transformation.

This isn't a traditional photography workshop with wellness added as an afterthought. It's a holistic experience where photography, mindfulness, cultural immersion, and personal transformation happen simultaneously.

We photograph iconic Southwestern landscapes made famous by Ansel Adams. We soak in natural hot springs under desert skies. We practice yoga at dawn. We explore artist colonies and indigenous traditions. We share meals where centuries of culinary heritage meet contemporary innovation.

We slow down. We see deeply. We let this place shape us.

Welcome to Aperture & Essence: Santa Fe.

The Place

Ojo Santa Fe Spa Resort

Nestled in the high desert hills just outside of Santa Fe, Ojo ("eye" in Spanish - how perfect is that?) sits at the confluence of ancient mineral springs and centuries of healing tradition.

Your sanctuary includes:

  • Private room for the entire retreat
  • Natural hot springs pools (multiple temperatures)
  • Daily morning yoga classes (included)
  • Meditation garden and labyrinth
  • Chef-prepared meals featuring New Mexico cuisine
  • Spa facilities and optional massage services

The landscape:

  • 7,000 feet elevation - crystalline light
  • Dramatic desert skies
  • Panoramic mountain views
  • Minutes from Santa Fe Plaza and galleries
  • Day trip distance to Taos and Ghost Ranch

This is where Georgia O'Keeffe found her vision. Where Ansel Adams made some of his most iconic images. Where indigenous peoples have gathered for healing for thousands of years.

Now it's where you'll find yours.

Why Santa Fe?

Santa Fe isn't just another photogenic destination - it's a place that has drawn artists, seekers, and visionaries for centuries precisely because something about this high desert landscape facilitates transformation.

The light at 7,000 feet is crystalline - photographers call it "magic hour light" all day long. Indigenous peoples have gathered at these mineral springs for healing for thousands of years. Georgia O'Keeffe found her artistic voice here. Ansel Adams made some of his most iconic images in these landscapes. There's a reason this place has been called "The City Different" - it operates on its own rhythm, slower and more intentional than the rest of the world.

For this pilot Aperture & Essence retreat, I chose Santa Fe because I know it intimately - I lived here for years, I know the back roads and hidden spots, I understand the culture beyond the tourist veneer. But more importantly, I know this place has the capacity to quiet the noise and create space for real seeing. The combination of stark desert beauty, rich artistic legacy, indigenous wisdom, and healing waters makes it ideal for the integration we're creating together.

The Photography

Iconic Locations, Intimate Instruction

Locations we will likely photograph:

Santa Fe Plaza & Historic District

  • Adobe architecture in golden hour light
  • Santa Fe Churches
  • Canyon Road galleries and artist studios
  • Hidden courtyards and colorful doorways

Ghost Ranch (O'Keeffe Country)

  • Dramatic desert cliffs and mesas
  • Ever-changing light on red rock formations
  • Vast New Mexico skies
  • Landscape that inspired American modernism

Taos & Beyond

  • San Francisco de Asis Church (Ansel Adams' famous subject)
  • Taos Pueblo (UNESCO World Heritage Site, living community)
  • Rio Grande Gorge Bridge
  • High desert vistas

Ojo & Surroundings

  • Sunrise/sunset from the resort
  • Abstract compositions with water and stone
  • Intimate landscapes and macro work

Instruction Tailored to YOU

Whether you shoot with an iPhone or professional gear, you'll receive:

  • Composition and creative vision guidance
  • Post-processing (from phone apps to professional software)
  • Portfolio review honoring your work wherever you are
  • One-on-one coaching sessions
  • Group critiques as sacred witnessing (not judgment)

Maximum 6 participants ensures genuine mentorship - not a crowd fighting for instruction.

The Transformation - The Rhythm of Your Days

Morning (6:00am - 12:00pm)

Your day begins gently - optional sunrise photography for early risers, followed by group breakfast together, then complimentary yoga (9am). We gather for the day's teaching module and photography session. Some mornings we'll explore nearby - Ghost Ranch's dramatic cliffs, Santa Fe's historic Plaza, Taos Pueblo's ancient adobe. Other mornings we stay close, working intimately with Ojo's landscape and light. Each session integrates a core practice: presence, slowing down, letting go of control, embodied seeing, or gratitude as a way of witnessing.

Midday (12:00pm - 4:00pm)

Lunch offers space to breathe - sometimes together at local restaurants experiencing New Mexican cuisine, sometimes on your own choosing your own adventure in Santa Fe or Taos. Afternoons blend cultural immersion (museums, galleries, sacred sites), post-processing time, individual coaching sessions, and unstructured rest. This is your time for hot springs, massage (optional add-on), journaling, or simply being. Not every hour is scheduled - transformation needs spaciousness.

Late Afternoon & Evening (4:00pm - 10:00pm)

Golden hour calls us back together with cameras ready. We photograph - sometimes at Ojo as light transforms the high desert, sometimes at locations made famous by Ansel Adams and Georgia O'Keeffe. Dinner brings the group together around the table, either at Ojo or at carefully selected Santa Fe restaurants where the food tells the story of this place. Evenings close with integration: portfolio reviews where we witness each other's work, life coaching sessions exploring what's shifting, or quiet reflection circles. Then hot springs under the stars, if you wish, before retreating to your private room.

Throughout the Week

You'll photograph iconic New Mexico locations - Ghost Ranch's red cliffs, San Francisco de Asis Church (Ansel Adams' famous subject), Taos Pueblo (a living UNESCO World Heritage Site), Santa Fe's galleries and churches, and Ojo's healing landscape. You'll soak in natural mineral springs daily. You'll taste centuries of culinary tradition. You'll practice yoga, meditation, and breathwork. You'll receive both technical photography instruction and life coaching. You'll have time alone and time in community. You'll slow down enough to actually see.

The Nourishment

Food as Cultural Immersion

New Mexico's culinary tradition runs deep - indigenous ingredients, Spanish colonial influences, Mexican heritage, contemporary innovation. Every meal is an opportunity to taste this place.

You'll taste:

  • Red and green chile (the state question: "red or green?")
  • Blue corn everything (tortillas, pancakes, enchiladas)
  • Posole, carne adovada, sopaipillas
  • Innovative takes on traditional dishes
  • Local wines and craft beverages (alcohol available but not included)

Most meals included (breakfast, dinner for 6 days) - we eat together, we share, we savor, we connect. Lunches not included as we may not always be together for lunch.

The Integration

What Makes This Different

If you've been to photography workshops before, you know the pattern: shoot sunrise, grab breakfast, shoot all morning, quick lunch, shoot all afternoon, shoot sunset, process images, critique, sleep, repeat.

Maybe you saw stunning landscapes. Maybe you got great shots.

But did you:

  • Actually experience where you were?
  • Understand the culture that shaped those landscapes?
  • Connect with the people who call that place home?
  • Taste authentic local cuisine beyond tourist restaurants?
  • Tend to your body and soul, or push through exhaustion?
  • Ask what your images are really about?

This isn't that.

Yes, we photograph. Yes, we chase the light. Yes, you'll grow as a photographer.

But we also:

  • Breathe and pause - meditation, yoga, soaking in healing waters
  • Immerse in culture - museums, galleries, indigenous sites, local encounters
  • Nourish our bodies - shared meals, rest time, massage, hot springs
  • Do the inner work - life coaching, reflection practices, asking deeper questions
  • Honor our whole selves - not just photographers passing through, but people being changed by place

Meet Your Guide

Matt Suess

Photographer | Life Coach | Cancer Survivor

I've spent 35 years behind the camera - 17 as a New England photojournalist (including 2003 New England Press Association Photographer of the Year), now as a worldwide photo educator and guide.

I lived in Santa Fe for several years in my earlier life. I know the light here. I know the back roads. I know where to find the stories. I know which restaurants locals actually go to.

This place shaped me, and I'm honored to share it with you.

My life has been a series of reinventions. In early 2025, seeking more meaning, I began my life coach certification. Later that year, cancer stopped me in my tracks.

During treatment, clarity arrived: The integration I'd been seeking was photography AND life coaching - two practices woven together, each amplifying the other.

I know what it's like to:

  • Question everything after a health crisis
  • Navigate major life transitions
  • Seek meaning beyond technical mastery
  • Want photography to be a practice, not just a pursuit
  • Need community with others on similar journeys

I don't hide my cancer journey - I share the good and the bad publicly. It's taught me presence, impermanence, gratitude, and what actually matters. These lessons run through everything I teach now.

Aperture & Essence exists because I needed it. And I kept meeting photographers who needed it too.

I'd be honored to guide yours.

One More Thing

If you've read this far, you're feeling the pull.

Maybe you're hesitating. Maybe it seems like a lot (time, money, vulnerability).

Maybe you're thinking: "Is this really for me?"

Let me tell you what I know:

The photographers who come to these retreats aren't the ones with the fanciest gear or the most impressive portfolios.

They're the ones who are ready.

Ready to slow down.

Ready to see deeply.

Ready to ask what their photography is really about.

Ready to let a place change them.

Ready to meet others on similar journeys.

You don't need to have it all figured out. You just need to say yes.

The light in New Mexico is waiting.

The hot springs are waiting.

Your seeing - your real seeing - is waiting.

Where seeing meets being.

I'll see you in Santa Fe.

— Matt

FAQ's

Q: Do I need to be a yoga practitioner to attend this retreat?
A: Not at all. Daily yoga is offered at Ojo and is completely optional. Whether you're an experienced yogi or you've never stepped on a mat, you're welcome. The practice is gentle and accessible to all levels. You can participate as much or as little as feels right for you.

Q: I don't have any life coaching experience. Will I feel out of place?
A: The life coaching component is integrated naturally throughout the retreat - it's not separate "therapy sessions" but rather reflective questions and group discussions that help you explore what's shifting in your photography and your life. No prior coaching experience needed - just openness to self-discovery.

Q: What if I'm not sure I'm ready for transformation? Can I just come for the photography?

A: Aperture & Essence isn't a traditional photography workshop with wellness added on - it's a genuinely integrated experience where the transformation IS the photography and vice versa. If you're drawn primarily to location shooting and technical instruction, I'd love to have you join one of my traditional photo workshops instead. This retreat is specifically for those ready to explore both simultaneously.

Q: What if I bring a point-and-shoot camera or mobile phone camera instead of a DSLR?
A: Perfect! I welcome all cameras - from phones to point-and-shoots to professional mirrorless and DSLR systems. The retreat is about seeing, not gear. I'll work with whatever equipment you bring and help you create meaningful images with it.

Q: Will there be time for solo exploration, or are we always in a group?
A: Both! The schedule balances group photography sessions and instruction with plenty of free time. Some afternoons often include a few hours for solo exploration, rest, hot springs, or whatever you need. You'll never feel rushed or overscheduled.

Q: I'm an introvert - will I be forced to share personal stuff in front of the group?
A: Never. Group discussions and portfolio reviews are invitational spaces - you share what feels comfortable. Many activities have both group and individual options. The small size (just 6 people) tends to feel safe rather than exposing, but you're always in control of how much you participate.

Q: What's the fitness level required?
A: Moderate. We'll have some gentle hiking and walking on uneven terrain, but nothing extreme. Plus a bit of walking around downtowns. Most photography locations are accessible. If you have mobility concerns, let's talk - we'll work with you.

Q: I'm going through [divorce/career change/health challenge] - is this appropriate?
A: Yes. Many participants are navigating transitions. The life coaching component specifically supports this. You're not alone.

Q: What's the weather like in late July?
A: Warm days (80s), cool evenings (50s-60s), possible afternoon thunderstorms (dramatic skies!). Layers are key. Detailed packing list provided upon registration.

Q: Can my partner/spouse come if they don't photograph?
A: Not for this intimate pilot retreat. Future retreats may offer non-photographer companion options.

Q: What's your cancellation policy?
A: Detailed policy is on this info page. Travel insurance strongly recommended.

Q: Will there be post-processing instruction?
A: Yes - tailored to whatever software you use (phone apps, Lightroom, Photoshop, etc.).

Q: I have [dietary restriction] - can you accommodate?
A: Yes. We'll collect dietary needs and work with restaurants/resort. Let us know.

Q: How public is this? Will you post about participants?
A: Your privacy is paramount. No posting without explicit permission. What's shared in the group stays in the group.

Matt Suess

Fine Art Photographer and OM SYSTEM, NiSi, Fotopro, Ororo Wear Ambassador

Photography has always been a huge part of my life starting at the age of 12 when I had my own black & white chemical darkroom. That early interest launched a full-time professional photography career that began in 1990 and continues today.

For the first 17 years of my career I was a photojournalist based in New England. I am a digital photography pioneer and began teaching digital photography to photojournalists in the late 90’s, helping bring digital cameras to two different newspapers. I was awarded the 2003 New England Press Associations Photographer of the Year award for my work at the Cape Cod Times. During my time as a photojournalist, I also photographed weddings & portraits, as well as corporate & commercial assignments.

In 2006 I decided to leave all of that behind and move West, where I am now a fine art landscape, nature, wildlife, travel, and Milky Way photographer, educator, and publisher. I also accept select luxury resort & architectural photography assignments.

I teach numerous field & classroom workshops throughout the year as well as online courses and I provide occasional free online webinars. You may have already seen my videos/webinars for OM SYSTEM / Olympus, Hunts Photo & Video, B&H Photo, Skylum and ON1. My passion for sharing and teaching what I have learned during my long career is evident in my down-to-earth and encouraging approach with my clients.

I am honored to be sponsored by Olympus / OM SYSTEM as an OM SYSTEM Ambassador but I teach photography to anyone using any camera brand.

I live in Bozeman, Montana with my blue heeler cattle dog. You can find me online on Instagram and YouTube at @mattsuessphoto

CLIENT TESTIMONIALS

Harley M.
"I think the way you handled the workshop was as near perfect as any student could ask for."
2019 Fall Grand Teton Photo Workshop Client
Winnie A.
"I really cannot wait for this... figuring out how to make this particular trip happen has been on my mind since I first decided I wanted to get into landscape photography. And I know after working with you this year, I will truly be ready for it!"
2022 Photo Mentorship Client & 2023 Lofoten Aurora Workshop Client

Jill E.

"You have the utmost patience and instead of just telling me to do something, or how to do something, you helped me to think about solutions. Many instructors/leaders have an ego and those individuals are difficult to learn from. You don't. You are a top-notch instructor."
2019 Spring Grand Teton Photo Workshop Client

"Matt is the best instructor I've had for any creative activity, but especially photography. He is patient in explaining things, and really helps you focus on the areas that YOU want to develop rather than focusing on what he thinks you need improvement on.

He also is the only instructor I've had in creative endeavors that is so supportive of you owning your unique style - I've always been one to do things my way, and most instructors struggle with students who don't "do as you're told," but Matt teaches to help you learn rather than trying to get you to do things his way.

Matt also is great about making sure that each person gets heard and gets time for their questions to be answered, which requires facilitation of the discussions in such a way that people aren't talked over but also that people don't feel like they are being shut down...this is not an easy thing to do. Plus, he has a great sense of humor, which is always appreciated!

The Milky Way Workshop felt more about learning some techniques, setting up the shot, then waiting to see if it worked. This was more thinking on your feet and instantly applying things and adjusting (which was likely part of my challenge...my brain wasn't ready).

I would recommend both trips, and have so loved showing people the magic that was captured both times. And it's fun to be able to brag about the great teacher we had each time."
